Universal Credit

Universal credit is a benefit for people of working age which will eventually replace the following benefits that people claim when out of work or when working and living on a low income:

  • Housing Benefit
  • Income Support
  • Income Based Jobs Seekers Allowance or JSA
  • Income related employment support allowance or ESA
  • Housing benefit
  • Child tax credit
  • Working tax credit

A claim for universal credit can be made whether you are working or out of work.  Your claim continues if you move in and out of work as long as your income and savings don't go above certain limits.

Universal Credit is a monthly payment that replaces some other benefits. You may be able to claim Universal Credit if you’re on a low income or out of work. How much you’ll get depends on your circumstances, including your income and how many children you have.
